Mini Milky Ways and Bittersweet Memories
The director was on maternity leave (she is now back). In her cube, lies a fabulous jar full of chocolates. Crunch, Mars Bars, Snickers all miniatures. I go to her cube to take a tiny bar when cravings hit and I have none in my drawer. There were Milky Ways lying in the jar yesterday and I very excitedly took two.
Milky Ways remind me of foreign supermarkets, like Coles (Debbie?), various American grocery stores (Jupes remember that obscenely priced grapes we bought in New York?). I love overseas supermarkets because they are always filled with food you only see on TV and magazines, because they stock my beloved Cheese Popcorn (nope Singapore still has not caught on).
Milky Ways remind me of the time I could not find them in Singapore and had to wait till I boarded a plane to eat them. They would lie in a carton, all for me to pick and eat.
So I waited till today to eat a bar. And it did not taste the way I remembered it. It was too sweet and stuck to my throat. That Milky Way did not taste as good as before, the same way that memories will always leave a sour note on your tongue.
