Don’t Cry Joni
Once upon a time, a long time ago, I was sitting in my hall room. I always listened to Gold 90.5 on the radio with all the music that I have grown up with. I usually know most of the songs and almost all the words to those songs. I do not know how I remember all the words but I do. ‘Don’t Cry Joni’ came on the radio that day and he sang along. Wide eyed, I stared at him. No one I knew knew that song and definitely no one I knew knew the words. To add more blow to the damage, he knew the words ‘Strangers in the night, exchanging glances.’. Old Blue Eyes’ Strangers in the night. Of course I fell that night. ‘Lovers at first sight.’ Funny how songs always get to me and render me helpless. Only those songs from a long time ago.
Don’t Cry Joni
(Conway Twitty)
Woman- Jimmy please say you’ll wait for me
I’ll grow up someday you’ll see
Saving all my kisses just for you
Signed with love forever true.
Man – Joni was the girl who lived next door
I’ve known her I guess ten years or more.
Joni wrote me a note one day.
And this is what she had to say.
Woman-Jimmy please say you’ll wait for me
I’ll grow up someday you’ll see
Saving all my kisses just for you
Signed with love forever true.
Man- Slowly I read her note once more
Then I went over to the house next door
Her tear-drops fell like rain that day
When I told Joni what I had to say.
Man- Joni, Joni please don’t cry
You’ll forget me by and by
You’re just fifteen and I’m twenty two,
and Joni I just can’t wait for you.
Man – Soon I left our little home town,
Got me a job and tried to settle down
But these words kept haunting my memory,
the words that Joni said to me.
Woman- Jimmy please say you’ll wait for me
I’ll grow up some day you’ll see
Saving all my kisses just for you
Signed with love forever true.
Man – I packed my clothes and I caught a plane
and I had to see Joni. I had to explain,
how my heart was filled with her memory
and ask my Joni if she’d marry me
I ran all the way to the house next door
but things weren’t like they were before
My tear-drops fell like rain that day
When I heard what Joni had to say.
Woman- Jimmy, Jimmy please don’t cry
You’ll forget me by and by.
It’s been five years since you’ve been gone
Jimmy, I – (married) – your best friend John.
I love this song and grew up listening to it. It was in a cassette in my dads car, and I use to sing along.
Dear Dizzy! Too bad you are not a boy! Heh. It was magic. It was a dream. He was Ben. Heh.
