The world is awful

Awful

Off shoulder

April6

Sometimes I wonder whether if I found the dress that was almost perfect and I wore it everyday, would it seem like I never bathe and wash my clothes?

How about like this girl in The Uniform Project?

From the website:

‘The Idea: Starting May 2009, I have pledged to wear one dress for one year as an exercise in sustainable fashion. Here’s how it works: There are 7 identical dresses, one for each day of the week. Every day I will reinvent the dress with layers, accessories and all kinds of accouterments, the majority of which will be vintage, hand-made, or hand-me-down goodies. Think of it as wearing a daily uniform with enough creative license to make it look like I just crawled out of the Marquis de Sade’s boudoir.’

Awful New Dunks

February5

I never had Dunks before. My only other high cuts are Reeboks. I cannot wait to wear them and they were a steal! 40 smackeroos thanks to discounts and vouchers (technically vouchers are money spent but I was having another usual bad day so allow me to be deluded).

Perfection

January26

Looking at this picture, makes me want to learn how to put on makeup, specifically smoky eyes and grow my hair out to braid it to one side.

Perfection

January24

At this moment in time, there cannot be a more perfect dress than Jason Wu’s sequined cocktail dress. Zoe Saldana wears his creation here.

Happy Feet

November25

Feet are severely abused. No one cares about them. They are squeezed into too small shoes. Perched upon pointy heels. Toes squashed unnaturally into sharp tips. Especially if you are flat footed. Your arches scream out in pain.

I look forward to wearing all my abandoned sneakers in the first quarter of the next year. And our darling Xiu Ru warns its not going to be all fun and games. Perhaps I will be doing lots of head hanging and looking at my feet sheepishly. And admiring my Happy Socks.

Xiu Ru bought them from Rockstar at Cineleisure. The shop is now one of her favourites. They have Toms and Keep sneakers, Baggu bags, Dolce Vita bracelets. They stock Real Simple and Lucky. My mother actually bought two tops from the shop when I brought her there. A shop after all our hearts definitely.

A week in dresses

November18

I love birthdays. Including mine. The festivities coming up next week warrant a entire new wardrobe. Afterall, I am only 27 once in a lifetime. Heh.

Marimekko is a Finnish textile company. Like all Scandinavian design houses, their patterns are clean lined. The colours! Are fabulous. I have a Marimekko pencil case only, having resisted the siren call of their bags sold in Prints.

I like colour. Alot. A little too over the top. Dresses are easy though my closet comprises of mostly separates. Somehow, tops and bottoms are not as memorable as dresses. But dresses require virtually no thought.

If I strike lottery (which is impossible considering I do not even buy lottery, heh), I would immediately rush to scoop all these beautiful frocks into my arms and prance in a new one everyday for a month even with no where to go.

Awful will be going to the Hello Kitty Lab at Expo next Tuesday. Hello Kitty is 35 this year and all sorts of collaborations with various brands have taken place this year. (Profit spinning cat that Hello Kitty.) But this Hello Kitty Lab must be something extraordinary! (Tickets are 35 smackeroos after all.) To visit the popular feline, this Nea dress, a short sheath with flower prints (a Marimekko speciality) will be the perfect outfit.

An Awful birthday week won’t be a birthday week without a trip to the land of Mambo, Zouk. Wednesday night Awful has a date to go dance the night away. Dance little lady dance. The swingy trapeze Tasaaja dress may not be that mod A line 60’s go go-ish but still easy to do a pirouette in.

Then its off to the beach with Jupes and Addy on Thursday. The last time I was at Sentosa with Yu, Ahmu and Tiffy, all the girls were in dresses except for me. Turns out I have no beach worthy dresses. Well, in an alternate universe, I would be all up for the beachy action in this tree patterned Nila 1 Tunic.

The actual birthday plans are still sketchy, with dimsum lunch with my Mama and a pantomime with the girls. But I got my heart set on this Rois Tunic, complete with pockets and all, loose enough for all the eating that I intend to do.

don’t stop (fashionising) now

Scary Debbie

As Missy Teo shot her fashion questions at her captive audience at Jackie’s surprise party, (the birthday girl was first to answer), the rest of us clamoured for her to answer her own questions. The aspiring Singapore Sartorialist told us that she absolutely could not put herself on her blog. I forgot her reason why. Blogs are the only place to be self absorbed. So I just told her, I will put her on my blog.

(All details recorded with Jupes’s pen on a napkin, I am now a bona fide struggling writer.)

- What did you have for lunch today? Rider’s Breakfast Brunch and iced latter low fat milk at Rider’s Cafe

- Job? Luxury Retail

- Style icons? Alexa Chung, Ashley Olsen, Carine Roitfeld

- Describe your personal style. A mix of Glam and Fun (Ed’s Note: Quirky, borderline posh lady and Brands.)

- I build my daily look around…. Anything newly acquired.

- Favorite designers? Marc Jacobs, Burberry, YSL, Ezzedine Alaia, Balmain (the latter a late entry)

- Favorite stores? Daikanyama shops (Tokyo), Outlet Malls in Europe, the World Wide Web:everything the web has to offer (Ed’s Note: Ebay addict since uni)

- I always buy on holidays: Household collectibles, displays, Native designer wares

- I will kill for Marchesa

- Most stylish city? Florence/Tokyo

- Favourite vacation spot? Shibuya in Tokyo

- Favorite drink? Mojitos, vodka chrysanthemum shots, iced tea (unsweetened), and of course, iced double tall low fat 1 pump toffee nut (now that it is available for Christmas) latte.

- I spend my weekends… catching up on sleep, trying to be a social butterfly, bathing my dog (the last time I was at her house, we watched Lucy being bathed by Missy Teo’s mother. Her mother was going on about how being gentle was the way to bathe the dog, I remarked that she would bathe her future kids the same way)

Missy Teo was wearing:
Black Top from Banana Republic
Chanel Ring and Zenith Watch
Grey Charcoal J Brand Jeans
Fendi Selleria and Fendi Shoes (newly Acquired)

Sexy Back

November5

A few dresses have been shortlisted under Bah! in my photos directory for the wedding dress. Which incidentally, wedding planning has ceased to a premature coma due to er, lack of interest after er, one day of ‘research’. A few (three to be specific) venues had been e-mailed with requests for replies via e-mail preferred. Replies by e-mail were received very promptly. Action on my hand, has not been so prompt. Anyway, I digress.

How about this dress for the party? It is a wedding dress too. That other wedding dress for the atheist (me) to wear to church (not by choice) will be delved into further another time. It is a glorious party dress. The Camilla and Marc Peony Frock. The lilac is perfection. Who does not love a dress that does not allow for a bra to be worn and requires the use of alot of Hollywood tape (or double sided tape for those in the know). Skinny knife pleats and thigh high. Another dress that will make an exit, the not so delicate cross cross double straps holding up the material, I shall have to spend the entire night with my back facing the party. It is also economical (after the initial pain of forking out seven hundred smackaroos for it) because it can be recycled for other parties. Xiu Ru suggests pairing it with boy friend blazers and leather jackets. ‘Isn’t that your wedding dress?’ ‘Yes, why aren’t you observant.’

Xiu Ru also suggested my hair to be short to everyone at Kino magazine section for the wedding while we were perusing the bridal magazines, flipping each page furiously. Of course my hair is going to be short, boy wild short, the way I like it. (I digress again, I cut my hair short again after the Great Eastern Run on Sunday. It is back to boy short, literally little good boy short. Not my choice of short hair style. No, I am not that kind of boy. I cannot wait to go and get it cut shorter. Wild boy short.)

Awful Armpit Stains

October27

Missy Teo on her daily fashion broadcast preached to fashion naysayers that autumn and winter outfits can be worn in Singapore despite of our mad tropic weather. Humidity with extra thanks to a certain Global Warming makes blazers and leggings almost impossible to wear.

Yes indeed, one must suffer for vanity. Sky high stilettos that result in blisters the size of boils. Skin tight body conscious dresses that require days of starving and constant breathing in. Extremely short rompers that give you a permanent wedgie and in which one is unable to bend over or even sit in. But Blazers and Leggings?

Missy Teo can carry it off. But not Awful here. Beads of sweat running down my neck like tiny rivers and down from my armpits to my elbows just from the eight minute walk from my house to the mrt station. Mt T-zone moistening the moment that I step into the outside. Unfortunately, the worse worse thing is the dark semi circle that appears on the underarm of the clothes that I wear just after a few minutes outdoors. It is the cusp of embarrassment. Also known as Armpit Stains or Pit Stains for short if you insist.

Once, I walked to certain mining company to conduct a client meeting. This was not unusual, some weeks find Seow and me trotting the fifteen minutes or so to the mining company almost every day. I usually bring my jacket and only put it on when inside the building. However, the weather that particular afternoon seemed deceptively fine so I wore my little sand cropped trench like short sleeved jacket on the walk there. Oh, did I underestimate Humidity thy enemy. I realised to my horror when I reached that sweat had seeped all the way to my jacket armpits and I spent the meeting trying very hard not to move my hands as I spoke about tax and what not (which if you know me is very difficult).

I did lay my hands on this particular Daiso product: Armpit Patches. Like panty liners for your armpits! But do they work? Well, if you are sedentary and the weather is relatively good. The patches are like panty liners which you stick on the inside of your top beneath your armpit and where pit stains would appear. Each pack contains 3 pairs for each armpit. But my sweat glands are hyper active which means, these patches do not absorb quick enough for me to remain pit free. Though I was very pleased with them on my first outing with them, it was to Zouk and showed Jackie on the way there. Heh.

Maybe this will work? Muji’s camisoles and slip dresses that have a double cloth layer beneath the arm area. Perhaps this warrants a trip to Muji. Maybe with the double protection (sounds like sanitary pads) the armpit patch plus the Muji tops will keep me from shying away from waving hello to you! But then again, there is still the issue of the chicken wing arms. Heh, one issue at a time.

Croc Dress

September30

I love animals. Read: I love to wear outfits with animals. I still remember this flamingo top that had me at first sight. A little like this Christopher Kane for Topshop Croc Dress. I saw it on a girl outside Zouk last Friday. It was perfect. This dress is my soul mate. i.e. totally ridiculous. At this point, I would do anything for it. Steal it off someone’s back maybe? Alas, it is Out Of Stock on the websites (both UK and US) and honeys, the Christopher Kane collection is not available in our local Topshop. I know. Such a bitch.

Crocodile!
